Tamworth Herald – Church Bears Gifts Help Syrian Refugees

More than 70 teddy bears have been donated as part of Project Paddington.

MORE than 70 teddy bears and £600 has been donated by members of Coleshill Parish Church and a village primary school to help Syrian refugees across the world. The congregation from the church and children from Coleshill Primary School have come together to take part in Project Paddington, which aims to support refugees fleeing Syria.

Youngsters have donated 76 bears to the project, with each one carrying a small message of comfort for the child or family it is given to.

Becky Stephens, curate at Coleshill Parish Church, said: “We really hope the 76 refugee children who will receive the bears will gain a small amount of comfort knowing that we are thinking of them and praying for their families.

“We have been collecting bears for about four weeks now and it all started when we saw the images being beamed onto our TV screens of the refugees fleeing their country.

“We decided this would be a great way to get the community to come together and help people less fortunate than ourselves.”

As well as the bears, the church raised more than £200 for the project which will also be used to help refugees.

There was also a separate fund-raising initiative for adults, which raised an extra £400 for Christian Aid.

Before being sent off, the teddy bears were brought to the church where the children who had donated them blessed them for their journey and their new owners.

Project Paddington, which is a nationwide initiative, was set up to encourage children to respond to the growing humanitarian crisis among refugees.

The bears collected in Coleshill will now be sent away and given to Syrian children all over the world.

Councillor Adam Farrell, who represents Coleshill North on North Warwickshire Borough Council, said: “Anything that we can do to help those less fortunate than ourselves is a great idea.

“It also engages young people and gives them a bit of awareness on events happening all over the world.

“Coleshill is a small village in Warwickshire and if we can do anything to help out in such a big crisis then we will. There are four million people who have been affected and although collecting the teddy bears doesn’t seem like a lot, it will mean the world to the families who receive the bears.”
