The collection at Warren Primary Academy, in Nottingham, finished up with more than 50 cuddly toys.

It was in aid of Project Paddington, which was set up after |Sheffield mum Joy French saw photographs of three-year-old Syrian Aylan Kurdi drowned on a Turkish beach.

A school spokesman said: “The children are keen to demonstrate the British values of respect and tolerance for others. We will be sending our teddies to refugee children with pictures and notes to show that we care.”

Ms French said her volunteers are talking to various organisations about how to get the teddies to refugee camps in Jordan.

She said: “The idea was for children to give their teddies with welcome messages attached to those who have fled the war in Syria.”
